BRAIDA DI GIACOMO BOLOGNA

Braida: An Adventure of Love and Viticulture
Braida is not just a winery; it’s a story rooted in Rocchetta Tanaro, Piedmont. The essence of Barbera defines us, but we are so much more. Our Barbera revolution began in 1961 with La Monella, changing how we think about this iconic grape. Other landmark wines like Bricco dell’Uccellone (1982), Bricco della Bigotta (1985), Il Bacialè (1994), Montebruna (2001), and Curej (2019) followed, each helping to shape the future of Barbera.
We are passionate about indigenous varieties like Grignolino, Moscato, Brachetto, and Nascetta, celebrating the unique identity of our land. Limonte GB elevates Grignolino to new heights, representing the deep bond between Braida and its territory.
Braida is a family: Giuseppe Bologna, Raffaella Bologna, and Norbert Dr. Reinisch built our legacy, and today, Giacomo Bologna leads us into the future, grounded in sustainability and innovation. Our commitment to quality wine, tradition, and hospitality continues to thrive.
We invite wine lovers and professionals to experience Braida, whether at Trattoria I Bologna or the Braida Wine Resort. Join us on this ongoing adventure!

She is Chizuko, a Japanese sommelier who fell in love with Italy so much that she moved and build her life in Rocchetta Tanaro, her story represents a bridge between Italian and Japanese cultures, a journey of personal and professional growth, a true testimony of passion for wine and integration. To cheers this union of these two countries, there is no better wine than La Monella, a wine that connect and celebrates life!

Listen to the Wine: La Monella Braida Giacomo Bologna taught us that wine is not only observed and tasted, but also listened to. Here’s the lively and sparkling sound of La Monella, a wine that whispers its joyful Piemontese soul. Let yourself be carried away by the rustle of the bubbles, by the sound in the glass: it's the voice of the wine speaking directly to the heart. Do like Giacomo, bring the glass close to your ear, close your eyes, and listen…

Braida Curej, Cascina San Bernardo. Un riscoperto terroir della Barbera di Rocchetta Tanaro.

There are wines that are loved at first taste. That are remembered. That enter history. Wines that, in some way, know how to shape history. This is the case of Bricco dell'Uccellone di Braida, first harvest 1982, exactly 40 years ago. 1982-2022: celebrating the first 40 harvests of Bricco dell'Uccellone, the symbolic wine of the Barbera revolution!

Braida Wine Resort: a unique location. A beautiful hill ridge, with an open view over the rooftops of Rocchetta and the meander of the River Tanaro. Amidst natural forests populated by locust, elm and oak trees. The Braida Wine Resort is located in the hamlet of Asinara, in a typical 18th-century Pied-montese farmhouse originally named after Saint Bernard of Menton, protector of climbers and mountaineers. L’Uccellone was the nickname of a woman who lived on the hill where the vineyards were located. Her nose looked like a bird’s beak and she always wore black, and this is how she got her nickname in the village.

Made with 100% Barbera grapes in the hills planted with vines owned in Rocchetta Tanaro.

Temperature controlled maceration on skins lasts 20 days. The wine is then transferred to oak barriques where it ages for 12 months, before ageing for another 12 months in the bottle.

Very deep ruby red colour with garnet highlights. Rich and complex bouquet with outstanding concentration and density; scents of red berries and forest fruits are particularly evident, with a background of minty spices, vanilla and liquorice. Generous flavour with excellent body and remarkable structure, a perfect combination of the characteristics of the grape and the contribution of wood, resulting in refined smoothness and class, with a very long aromatic persistence. Ideal with roasts and meat dishes, also with sauces, and mature cheeses.

It took us 35 legal documents and seven years to bring together the numerous parcels of land that make up Montebruna, a property with outstanding oenological value. When we succeeded, we were so ecstatic that we gave it both voice and verse, involving artists, poets and musicians, who have sung about this Barbera and its land, “a land that speaks”.

Montebruna is a Barbera d’Asti DOCG that comes from 100% Barbera grapes owned in Rocchetta Tanaro.

The must spends two weeks in temperature-controlled steel tanks, where it ferments, and is then transferred to large oak barrels to age for a year.

Purplish ruby red colour. Very evident scents of ripe cherry and red berries. The flavour is deep, full and harmonious, with a persistent finish that lingers on the palate, ending with a hint of almond. Excellent, balanced, fragrant and very easy to drink, it accompanies pasta dishes, red and white meats, cheeses and cured meats.

Il Bacialé”, in Piedmont dialect means the matchmaker, the person who arranged marriages between members of noble families in the area. And this wine represents an arranged marriage: we wed the grape so beloved by our family, Barbera, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The perfect union, destined also to age beautifully.

Barbera, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc. Grapes from properties between Castelnuovo Calcea, San Marzano Oliveto and Rocchetta Tanaro. Each variety is harvested and vinified separately starting by degree of ripeness, from Merlot, Barbera, Cabernet Franc and finally Cabernet Sauvignon.

The hand-picked grapes undergo further selection by expert personnel, followed by destemming and soft pressing, which ensure that the grapes remain whole and prevent the formation of unpleasant herbaceous notes. Fermentation takes place in tanks made of steel, which prevents contamination better than other materials and guarantees better temperature control.
The must is pumped over (roughly once every eight hours, every day) during fermentation and délestage is carried out a couple of times in the first 15 days, for a total of about three weeks.
The wines are racked into barriques to optimise the stabilisation of the colour and malo-lactic fermentation.
This is followed by ageing in barriques, selected on the basis of the different types of wine, for 12 months followed by 12 months of ageing in large casks after careful tasting to decide the composition, which can vary in terms of percentage every year, and then blending. The blended wine then spends at least 12 months ageing in the bottle.

The Latin wording on the label, “Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas”, means “the farmer directs the work of the plough”. We chose it when we bought the soil and became its owners. It is a soil on the hillside of Mango, a village in the Langhe district. We bought it in 1990. The letter G highlighted on the label emphasises the passage from father to son of knowledge of the vineyard: Giuseppe, Giacomo and then Giuseppe again.

Made with 100% Moscato d’Asti grapes grown in an estate-owned soil in Mango.

Maceration on skins for several hours in a horizontal press, followed by pressing. Vinification off skins, with prise de mousse in temperature controlled pressurised tanks, at about 4°C for 20 days. Upon completion of fermentation, stabilisation with cooling to -4°C, micro filtration and bottling ageing for several weeks.

Bright straw yellow colour, nice froth and rich perlage. An extraordinarily fresh and very variegated bouquet, with fresh fruit, orange blossom, rose and musk standing out among the many notes. A gracefully sweet flavour with the grape’s characteristic aromaticity, delicious and lingeringly persistent. Pair with fruit and fruity desserts, pastries, panettone, hazelnut tart and particular cheeses, such as Castelmagno. Very pleasant as an aperitif and as a thirst-quenching drink whenever you like.

Giacomo loved the sport of handball, or “pallone elastico”, a Piedmontese game played in the hills around Acqui, the finest area for the production of Brachetto. This is how Giacomo, like his father before him, came to inherit the nickname of the handball champion “Braida”, and how, in 1967, our family began making Brachetto d’Acqui.

Made with 100% Brachetto.

Steel tanks for the temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration of the skins for 36-48 hours. Passage in pressurised tanks for the prise de mousse. Stabilisation and micro filtration are followed by bottle-ageing.

Light ruby red colour with purple highlights, lively froth and persistent perlage. Vigorous, fragrant and aromatic perfume with evident scents of ripe red fruit and withered rose. Sweet, smooth, delicate, sparkling and suave with a lingering aromatic persistence. It pairs with strawberries, forest fruits and with dried fruit too, such as walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios and figs. The most traditional pairing, with dessert at the end of a meal or in the middle of the afternoon, is with pastries and cakes, from Christmas panettone to jam tart. Braida Brachetto d’Acqui is perhaps the only wine in the world which is the perfect match for chocolate.
