Azienda Vitivinicola Battifarano

We are a family-owned, estate-based producer of hand-crafted wines, using grapes exclusively produced in our own vineyards with an Integrated Farming Management system.

The estates, with a total area of approximately 100 ha, are dedicated to vineyards (35ha), with olive and peach cultivation. They lay on the Ionic coastal area of Basilicata, the land also known as “Enotria”, with reference to the “people from the land of vines - Οἰνωτρία”, which is on the border with Apulia region. The region, formerly known as Magna Grecia (circa 7-8th century B.C), is still one of the most pristine and unspoiled areas in Italy.

“Masseria Battifarano” has belonged to the family Battifarano for over five centuries, across 17 generations and is currently managed by the second generation of Agronomists (Francesco Battifarano, son of Vincenzo).

Our Winery expresses the best mix between the traditional “wines of place” and great international blends, combining the native vines such as Primitivo and Greco, with international vines such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon. As a matter of fact, our wine portfolio ranges from traditional powerful, inky reds from Primitivo, to fresher reds and rosés, as well as some fruity and bright white wines.

In particular, we are honored to have taken part in the birth of the Primitivo Matera DOC in 2005, as founding member of the consortium.
This Primitivo wine is named after Matera, the unique and ancient cave-city, Unesco site famous for its sassi, stone houses carved out of the caves and cliffs, that is the European Capital of Culture of 2019, thus attracting great attention from media and travellers around its history and food culture.

Greco Bianco - the white grape variety of the area. Fruity aromas of citrus, peach and apricot are released in the glass. Intense with a fresh palate and mineral notes.

Fruity aromas are released in the glass creating an amazing harmony. The bright yellow colour and the green nuances remind of the rediscovered life of the plots and vineyards, which had turned into swamps for centuries after experiencing a glorious past of millennial agricultural use. With the reclamation of the area called “Paglie di Battifarano”, completed in the ‘50s, these sea-facing lands were brought back to the good old times. Today they produce full-bodied Greco grapes that are full of personality.

Rosè wine from Primitivo. Intense pink in colour with aromas of ripe berry fruit and fresh strawberry. Clean, fresh and dry. It has fruit rich palate with a pleasant finish.

Flowers and fresh fruit for a bright and full-bodied rosé wine produced with Primitivo grapes, which undergo maceration for at least 24 hours.

Primitivo grapes were the first grapes to be harvested in Southern Italy and their harvest traditionally started the grape harvest feast.

Akratos Rosato is a fresh and persistent wine for celebrations, whose name reminds of the pure oinos, with no water added, which was offered to the God Dionysus by the ancient Greeks who left important traces in the Battifarano farm winery.

Our most representative wine - Primitivo Matera. On the nose intense aromas of red fruit, red cherry and plum. A rich palate with great concentration and elegance. The finish is long with great acidity and balance.

Spices of the Mediterranean woodlands and extracts of red fruits create the full scent of this well-structured red wine produced with Primitivo grapes, traditionally used for the grape harvest feast.

It’s a symposium wine, almost a ceremonial wine: àkratos oinos, as the ancient Greeks and the Oenotrians (who lived in this area where the Battifarano family has been working for centuries) used to call it. A pure, refined wine, that could only be drunk by the powerful God Dionysus in ancient times, whereas the ordinary people could drink it mixed with water

Petit Verdot - A particular name for a rich and intense wine. Black fruit, tobacco, and vanilla on the nose. The palate is full, concentrated and creamy. It is aged for 12 months in French oak. This a great example of a wine from Southern Italy.

This wine is named after the river that flows through the Battifarano farm winery, usually called “Toccaculo” (literally “touching the bottom”) in ancient maps, since women used to lift up their skirts in order to cross the river and they were therefore “touched” by it. It is a full-bodied and genuine wine with strong aromas from the lands close to the river. The grapes are the result of an experiment carried out with ancient vines and clones that have been selected for many years.

Our finest wine. Harmonious aromas of dark fruit and warm oaky notes. It is lush on the palate and explosive in the mouth. It is well-balanced with ripe tannins and a long finish.

Our Curaffanni wine is the result of the selection of the best grapes from our farm winery.
After an accurate fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months in small French oak barrels for a fine and high quality wine.

It offers aromas of red, black fruit and toasted oak flavors. Cassis ad chocolate followed by a lush attack of ripe fruit.
It’s bold and rich, silky smooth feel and exceptional depth of flavor. Firm tannins and pleasant finish.

It is a meditation wine for relieving the stress of a long working day.
