The mission of Istituto Italiano della Saldatura - Non Profit Organisation (IIS) is to “promote and foster in Italy the progress of welding in all fields, including similar and complementary techniques, and to contribute to its knowledge and dissemination”. IIS cooperates or oversees various executive committees, for research and regulation at European and international level. The active presence of the Italian Institute of Welding in these bodies results in intense international activity that produces contacts with similar institutes in the most industrially developed countries. IS holds the Chair of the Welding Commission of UNI. In this role, it takes an active part in the works of ISO (International Standardization Organization) and CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation).
Over more than seventy years of activity, IIS has contributed to drawing up an imposing amount of technical regulations, making use of the knowledge deriving from studies and research, and of the practical experience gained from its technical support activity.
Today, IIS employs about 240 people and performs services through its Laboratory, institutional activities through the organisation of theoretical and practical training in the field of welding techniques and non destructive testing, conferences and technical workshops, it coordinates the sales and marketing strategies of the Group and research and development activities, assures and deals with external relations for the Group through its media. IIS also includes the main corporate services functions for the companies in the IIS Group.

IIS Education & Training
The IIS Training activities started with the very birth of the Italian Institute of Welding, soon after its foundation. Specifically, the first IIS course was the “Specialisation Course in Welding for Engineers and Industrial Technicians” (first edition in 1952), whose structure remained virtually unchanged, although its curriculum was updated over the years, until the establishment of welding coordination Professionals, internationally harmonised (International Welding Engineer, Technologist and Specialist).
Since then, the training services have been growing and diversifying, and now deal exhaustively with all topics that either directly or indirectly have to do with the sector of welding.
A constant and characteristic feature of the activities carried out by IIS in this context is the close ties with the world of industry, as our mission includes the transfer and dissemination of the experience and good practices stemming from hands-on applications. IIS teachers and trainers have in fact extensive experience gained “in the field”, which they convey during courses.
An equally significant focus is placed on the carefully selected, abundant and high quality supporting materials, printed matter and specimens used during the courses. The training activities are performed by IIS on the basis of a number of authorisations and acknowledgements, among which:
Authorised Training Body (ATB) EWF and IIW, NDT Examination Centre according to ISO 9712, School recognised by the European Space Agency (ESA), AWS Agent for the supply of training and certification services of the American Welding Society (and more). The macro-areas of IIS courses: Welding education & training, Corrosion and in-service inspection courses, NDT training, Training in the electronic sector, Training for adhesive bonding technology, Courses for tehnological transfer, Custom education & training.
IIS Laboratory
The IIS Laboratory is divided into Testing Laboratory, specialized in mechanical, technological, and special tests, and Welding Processes Laboratory where research, experiments, studies and setups are carried out with traditional and advanced welding processes.
The Testing Laboratory is accredited by ACCREDIA (National System for the Laboratories Accreditation) - Cert. nr. 0029 according to UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard - for the execution of the most conventional tests on metallic and plastic materials. At the laboratory facilities fracture mechanics tests, creep tests, corrosion tests and tests in the field of microjoining are available.
The experience gained in metallography and corrosion, integrated with structural engineering competencies are adopted to undertake mechanical damage analysis and to perform metallurgical studies.
The Laboratory can boast a longstanding experience in the design of testing programs related to the behaviour of base materials and welded joints, and addressed to failure analysis. The annexed mechanical workshop allows the set-up of moke-up and of particular test equipments to carry out full-scale tests on small and medium components.

IIS Inspections and NDT
IIS operates in the field of inspections and testing with about 60 Qualified Inspectors, capable of performing second and third party inspections, non destructive testing with different methods, expediting, QA/QC functions, inspections on site. At shortest notice our inspectors can be operating at any location, in Italy and abroad, in workshops, construction yards, plants, to perform inspections and tests on pressure equipment, steel structures, piping. We have accomplished inspections and in-site NDT in a large number of countries (more than 70 countries in the last ten years). IIS Engineering
IIS boasts an Engineering Division provided with the most advanced tools and expertise to take on complex problems of structural engineering, process engineering, material and corrosion engineering.

IIS Certification
IIS operates in the field of certification through its own company IIS CERT, providing its Clients with certification of quality management systems, environment and safety, manufacturing processes, materials, products and personnel. A distinguishing feature since the establishment of the IIS Group is the strict link with the industrial world in materials production, fabrication processes, in service requirements and performances of components and structures, knowledge and consistent updating about standards and regulations: this feature is perceptible through the daily activity of our Inspectors and Auditors and their hands on experience. IIS CERT is a Brussels notified institution with the number 0475 EC and operates accreditations ACCREDIA and authorizations for the European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF), International Institute of Welding (IIW), the Ministry of Economic Development and the National Agency for the Safety of Railways (ANSF).
