Fiori d'Arancio Pizzo Chiacchierino

My name is Francesca Alferi, and years ago, my sister and I decided to fulfill a lifelong dream—honoring an art we've practiced since childhood, passed down through generations, now disappearing. I'm referring to the art of embroidery known as "Pizzo Chiacchierino: the quintessence of retro embroidery."

THE HISTORY
Pizzo Chiacchierino is essentially a form of lace composed of a series of rings and arcs, crafted using tools called shuttles. This delicate decorative lace is suitable for borders and is often used to refine doilies, curtains, and collars. Distinctive features of this technique include loops and arcs of thread covered in knots (which produce an effect similar to crochet's slip stitch), along with "pippiolini," small protrusions that form decorative elements and contribute to the lace's structure.

The origins of this ancient art fade into the mists of time, intertwined with fascinating legends. The earliest documented instances of this technique date back to France between the 1600s and 1700s when courtly nobility embraced creating this shuttle lace in a light and informal manner—perhaps leading to the term "Frivolité" (frivolity).

In the following decades, chiacchierino became a widespread fashion, with these delicate laces adorning clothing, sheets, and towels in trousseaus, reaching its zenith during the Victorian Era. During this time, chiacchierino spread across Europe and beyond.

In Italy, during the 19th century, chiacchierino lace was primarily crafted by nuns in convents, later experiencing a period of considerable popular success between the two world wars. During this period, homemakers prepared bridal trousseaus, and collars made with this technique became particularly fashionable.

Fiori d’Arancio, with its motto "Transforming tradition into wearable art," has committed to evolving this technique. By using high-quality silk thread (including 24k gold) and semi-precious stones, we've created a product that becomes a sustainable, unique, lightweight, and fascinating jewel. Today, the product is distributed in Italy, France, England, and through our online shops, we've been able to share this art with over 1000 people worldwide in 2022 and 2023. We're actively seeking new collaborations and new challenges.
