APOLLONIO1870

This is a story of land and passion, that of the Apollonio family; inextricably linked to the destiny of a winery by the same name and that today exports its wines to over 30 different countries around the world. It continues to produce wine using the same methods dear to its founders, while applying the most advanced technologies through the optimization of their production process, down to the marketing of its labels. The Apollonio winery’s history took root in 1870. Since then, particular attention has been paid to the valorization of Salento’s main grape varieties (mainly Negroamaro and Primitivo, but also Malvasia nera, Susumaniello, Bianco d’Alessano), to the careful selection of the types of wood used for the long ageing processes and to the strong link with the territory which has always been the champion of quality production.

The union between two apparently different varieties, Negroamaro and
Montepulciano creates the "oenological miracle" of this denomination, one
that gives life to wines of great longevity suitable for extended ageing, the
pearl of the Salento area. Negroamaro owes its name to the terms "niger"
(Latin) and "mavros" (Greek) which both refer to the colour black. Its great
versatility makes it suitable for all types of winemaking. Montepulciano
is a vine cultivated in most of the eastern coast of Italy. When young, it
has impressive acidity, which, when well handled, allows it to age superbly.

Structured red wine produced from Primitivo grape manually harvested and aged.

A historical Salento blend often carried out directly in the vineyard with
the alternation of eight plants of Negroamaro and two of Malvasia Nera.
Negroamaro, likely owes its name to the terms "niger" (Latin) and
"mavros" (Greek) which both refer to the colour black. Its great versatility
makes it suitable for all types of winemaking.
Malvasia Nera, a grape variety with great softness and aroma, it is best
for balancing out the angular qualities of the other two grapes.

Verdeca is a white grape variety native to Puglia, its greenish shade is
suggested in its name. An elegant variety with great vigour.

Susumaniello is a black grape variety native to Puglia and grown in
Salento. The name suggests it is derived from the word "somarello", a
term used in Apulian dialect. Traditionally the meaning expresses the
increased productivity of a plant weighted down by bunches, such as "a
load carried by a donkey". After the first decade of the vine's life, the
bunches of grapes are removed and its production lessens in quantity
but improves in quality, producing wines of great expression.
