Rethinking manufacturing and product design for a changing world - Nowadays, design is called on to adapt to the inevitable environmental challenging changes in the business models of the manufacturing industry, more than the recent past based on the efficient use of resources to produce that will have once again to become durable, reconditioned and reusable. From increasingly interconnected and symbiotic industrial systems to the development of platforms that facilitate collaboration between users, institutions, and companies, to enable products to re-enter the industrial processes, and then be transformed into yet further products.

Sustainability in design is a concept that remains at the core of product design worldwide. It refers to meeting the needs of the present while still conserving resources for future use, nevertheless pursuing beauty and craftsmanship. This is one of the main concepts around which Veronica Manson, Director of Istituto Italiano di Cultura, would like to hinge the panel discussion that she will moderate along with Marco Saladini, Italian Trade Commissioner who will prompt panelists to comment on the interaction between designers and clients when it comes to manufacturing, especially using technologies or skills for which Italy is famous.
