METICAL SLOWLY DEPRECIATES WHILE US DOLLAR EDGES TOWARDS 12-MONTH HIGH

The metical has suffered a slow devaluation against the US dollar in the last week and the price of the US currency is now approaching its highest value in the last 12 months, according to Euronet. The US dollar – the currency used as the basis for calculating the reference exchange rates for all other currencies in Mozambique – closed on Monday at 62.18 meticais, the last in a sequence of price hikes since August 2018, when it cost 57 meticais, according to Euronet’s exchange rates. The last time the US currency rose above 62 meticais in the last 12 months was in March 2018. During the last week, the US dollar was bought in Mozambique at an average of 61.38 meticais and sold at 62.59, according to daily rates released by the central bank and followed by Lusa. The euro was bought for an average of 70.24 meticais, 45 metical cents more than the previous week, and sold at 71.64, up 47 metical cents. The Bank of Mozambique reopened today after Monday’s public National Heroes holiday, held over from Sunday. (ICE MAPUTO)
