Hong Kong

Hong Kong's economy is forecast to grow by 4.4 percent in 2021, thanks to the recovery of mainland markets and local consumption and service sectors, following mass vaccinations. China's GDP will grow by 8.5 percent this year, driven by export and manufacturing investment, said Hongbin Qu, co-head of Asian economics research and chief economist, Greater China at HSBC. The yuan would appreciate to 6.4 per US dollar in the next few months, supported by the strength of China's economy, attractive yields, which will continue to attract capital inflows, said Paul Mackel, global head of forex research. But in the second half, the yuan may face some appreciation pressure and fall to 6.6 per dollar. HSBC is positive on Hong Kong equities with a narrowing premium with A-shares, said Herald van der Linde, head of equity strategy in Asia Pacific. He expects the Hang Seng Index at 29,810 points at the end of this year. He is overweight on some property developers, shipping firms, and exchange operators.   (ICE HONG KONG)
