Australia - Nuova Zelanda

David Jones is closing its New Zealand store in Wellington, which opened with great fanfare four years ago, and replacing it with an online store, delivering e-commerce orders overseas for the first time. David Jones spokesman confirmed the retailer had agreed with the landlord to bring forward the expiry of the lease and would close the store in June next year. David Jones’ Auckland store, which opened in 2019, will continue to trade and the upmarket retailer will launch a full-service online offer in New Zealand next year after establishing appropriate supply chains. The Wellington store was David Jones’ first foray overseas following a $2.1 billion takeover by South African retailer Woolworths Holdings in 2014. David Jones invested about $NZ20 million transforming the 152-year-old store in Wellington after taking over the lease held by New Zealand’s oldest department store, Kirkcaldie & Staines. The Wellington store was expected to be the first of several David Jones stores overseas. But as bricks-and-mortar sales decline and online retail accelerates, David Jones is now closing unprofitable stores “As the retail sector continues to transform, including the accelerated shift to online, the optimisation of our retail network – through investment in our digital and physical channels, a focus on right-sizing and, where necessary, consolidation of our physical footprint – is critical to meeting the changing needs of our customers,” a David Jones spokesman said on Wednesday. “David Jones remains committed to serving our customers in New Zealand and, in addition to our Newmarket store in Auckland, we look forward to introducing David Jones online to all our New Zealand customers in the second half of 2022, closely following the closure of our Wellington store,” he said.
