POLAND: GDANSK INTENDS TO BECAME SINGAPORE OF THE BALTIC SEA

Gdańsk container terminal DCT expects that 2021 will be record high in terms of transhipment, while it will launch the third hub in 2024 to boost capacity by 50 percent. In 2020 the seaport processed over 1.9m TEU. "We recorded a slight drop in comparison with 2019, mainly in the segment of sea transit," said Cameron Thorpe, executive director of DCT Gdańsk. He also added that transhipments for local market increased by 4 percent despite of the pandemics, which proves strength and resilience of the Polish economy as well as indicated that Polish firms were able to quickly adjust and retain business activities. Demand for commodities on the local market is still on high level according to Thorpe. In Q1 2021 DCT recorded a 9 percent growth of transhipments y-o-y. The director also explained that the terminal is recording better results than in record high 2019, which was however not easy and required implementing numerous security measures due to the pandemics.
