INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION- THE ENERGY FALLOUT SHOWS UP

The index of industrial production (IIP), which details the growth of different sectors in the economy, fell to 3.1% on-year in September, a sharp decline from the 12% gain clocked in August. The fallout of the energy crunch was visible in sharp sequential contraction across the electricity and the manufacturing sector, as coal-using sectors such a cement and steel, were asked to cut production and redirect coal for power generation. In addition factors such as semiconductor chip shortage, disruption caused by extended seasonal showers resulting in unexpected floods and waning of the statistical base effect also resulted in India’s industrial output for September to decline to a seven-month low.
