Taipei, Sept. 13 (CNA) Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. said it is "looking forward" to working with partners in India, following reports that it had reached an agreement with Mumbai-based multinational Vedanta Limited to produce semiconductors in Gujarat.According to a Reuters report Tuesday, Vedanta and Hon Hai have signed a pact to invest US$19.5 billion to set up a semiconductor project in Gujarat, the home state of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.In a statement later that day, Hon Hai, known internationally as Foxconn, said it applauded the efforts by Gujarat's government "to attract semiconductor development and upgrade government efficiency."Hon Hai added that Gujarat's improving infrastructure, as well as the government's "active and strong support," had bolstered its confidence in plans to set up a semiconductor factory in the state."We look forward to working with our partners and the Gujarat leadership," the statement said.Meanwhile, an industry source told CNA Tuesday that Vedanta's desire to pursue such a large investment likely meant that it would not be limited to semiconductors, but also include display production.According to the Reuters report, Hon Hai will act as a technical partner in the deal, which will be financed by Vedanta, as the mining conglomerate seeks to diversify into chip manufacturing.Hon Hai and Vedanta previously announced in February that they had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on a US$119 million investment to produce semiconductors in India, in which the companies would hold 40 and 60 percent stakes, respectively.(By Chang Chien-chung and Matthew Mazzetta)Enditem/ASG (ICE TAIPEI)
