KAZAKHSTAN-PRESIDENT-TRANSPORT-DEVELOPMENT

Kazakhstan should build more transport infrastructure in eastern regions – TokayevPresident of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered the government and regional authorities to embark on development of transport corridors in the east of the republic."There are a lot of transport routes going through the Abay region, which borders on Russia and China. To be able to make a most effective use of these opportunities, our roads must be of high quality and safe. In order to maximize the transport potential of our country, we plan to build a railway line to China through Bakhty. This project is of vital importance for us, and the government is working on it," Tokayev said at a meeting with population of the Abay region on Friday. In addition, Semey should have a dry port and a warehousing and distribution center, according to the president."There is an international highway passing through Semey. First of all, two of the city’s bridges have to be repaired. Construction of another bridge in the city has started this year. The government and the regional administration will make sure the construction should be completed in three years. I also order that the suspension bridge [in Semey] should undergo major repairs," Tokayev added. In 2017, Kazakhstan and China discussed a possibility of building a railway Karamay-Tachen-Ayagoz through the East Kazakhstan region. They agreed that the railway would link the northeast provinces of China, Kazakhstan, Russia and the European countries. The same year, the two countries signed a memorandum to conduct preliminary studies as necessary for construction of the Bakhty-Ayagoz section of the Karamay-Tachen-Ayagoz railway, which would be part of the international rail corridor.
