EAST AFRICA - The East African Community (EAC) is establishing a Diaspora gateway to help citizens of the Seven Member Bloc living abroad invest and trade in the region. This was announced by EAC Secretary General Peter Mathuki during a recent conference on trade and investment, organized by the East African Chamber of Commerce in Irving, Texas, in the United States and which brought together hundreds of EAC citizens established in the United States. and investors focused on the region. "The EAC recognizes the role of diaspora remittances, which continue to outstrip foreign direct investment (FDI) to become the main source of external funding," said Mathuki, while members of the EAC diaspora noted that the lack of confidence in local financial institutions is one of the main obstacles to investment.  Mathuki's announcement comes after remittances from the diaspora have had an upward trajectory in recent years.  For example, remittances from the diaspora last year in Kenya reached $ 3.718 billion, in Uganda $ 599.3 million, in Tanzania $ 569.5 million and in Rwanda $ 246 million.  Together, remittances account for 35% of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the EAC, which amounted to $ 8.2 billion last year. The EAC is an intergovernmental organization made up of seven countries in the Great Lakes region of East Africa: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda.  (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
