ETHIOPIA - Safaricom Ethiopia, which announced the official commercial launch of its mobile network last month, reported it has already surpassed one million subscribers. Earlier this month Safaricom Kenya, which is a major shareholder of Safaricom Ethiopia, confirmed that the new company had attracted a total of 740,000 subscriptions as of October 31, 2022, up from 180,000 at the end of the previous month. Now, the Ethiopian operator has confirmed it has passed the one million mobile subscription mark, saying it has "registered an average of 20,000 customers a day since it launched city-by-city pilots in August 2022," according to its momentum had been "further bolstered by accelerated growth following a nationwide launch ceremony." Commenting, Anwar Soussa, Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom Ethopia, said, “We are delighted to have reached the milestone of one million customers. We have seen the number of our customers continue to grow and enthusiasm in the adoption of our data packages, devices, voice and SMS. As we continue our phased commercial rollout, we are receiving positive feedback on the 4G data experience on our network and are excited to continue working to serve all of Ethiopia.” Meanwhile, Safaricom also confirmed that its network is now active in a total of 17 cities, namely: Adama, Addis Ababa, Awoday, Bahir Dar, Bishoftu, Debre Birhan, Dessie, Dilla, Dire Dawa, Gondar, Haramaya , Harar, Jimma, Kombolcha, Mojo, Sebeta and Shashemene.  (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
