Location of nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan to be openly discussed in 2023 – Energy MinistryThe location of the nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan will be discussed publicly in 2023, Minister of Energy Bulat Akchulakov said."The Zhambyl district of the Almaty region has been recommended as the most suitable location for the NPP. In 2023, the future location of the NPP will be offered for public discussion," Akchulakov said at an expanded meeting in the Ministry of Energy in Astana on Wednesday.Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov earlier told reporters Kazakhstan was working with Rosatom to implement a roadmap to prepare for the construction of an NPP in Kazakhstan.Kazakh Energy Minister Bolat Akchulakov said earlier that the government will decide on the supplier of technology for the nuclear power plant in 2023. According to Samruk-Kazyna, Rosatom has an advantage in terms of technology it can offer compared with the other suppliers.Kazakhstan plans to build an NPP near the Ulken village in the Almaty region, southeastern Kazakhstan. The construction could take up to ten years, with a power unit costing on average $5 billion, the Energy Ministry said. The country's projected energy balance for the period to 2035 includes a 2.4 gigawatt NPP as one of the options. (ICE ALMATY)
