INDONESIA'S PLN COOPERATES WITH IEA TO FINALISE ENERGY TRANSITION PLAN

Indonesia’s state-owned electricity firm, PT PLN, is cooperating with the International Energy Agency (IEA) to finalize the Just Energy Transition Partnership Investment and Policy Plan (JETP IPP) to accelerate Indonesia's energy transition. The cooperation was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PLN and IEA in Paris, France, on Tuesday, (18/4). PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said on Wednesday (19/4), "the new MoU is focused on supporting the global carbon emission reduction target," adding that both sides share the same vision for the future of sustainable energy that brings prosperity to the nation and the world. PLN and IEA will be the pioneers, showing the world that the energy transition road map can be built comprehensively from upstream to downstream through collaboration. According to Prasodjo, energy transition projects pose many challenges, including Indonesia's dynamic demand for electricity. In 2030, PLN will manage about 433 million tons of carbon emissions in the electricity sector in a business-as-usual scenario. The actions outlined in the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2021–2030 alone are aimed at reducing carbon emissions to 335 million metric tons of CO2, which will serve as the foundation for achieving the net-zero emission (NZE) target by 2060. Efforts to achieve NZE require accelerating measures such as attracting cheap funding for large investments. Meanwhile, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said that the agency fully supports Indonesia's steps toward an energy transition. According to him, the IEA's support for Indonesia can motivate other parties to collaborate on energy transition projects. (ICE GIACARTA)
