THE DATA CENTER INDUSTRY STILL HAS POTENTIAL TO GROW IN INDONESIA

The Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) Muhammad Arif Angga, believes that the data center (DC) industry in Indonesia has great opportunities to grow. He estimated that the total capacity requirement for data centers in Indonesia could reach nearly 1,000 megawatts (MW) when referring to the existing population. Arif explained that currently, data center penetration in Indonesia is recorded at 0.3 watts per capita, making it one of the lowest in Asia Pacific. The data center capacity in Indonesia for all ASEAN-6 countries is also only equivalent to 12.7 percent. In addition to the still low scale of the data center industry, the growth opportunities for the industry will also be supported by the internet penetration rate, which increases every year in Indonesia. The APJII survey revealed that Indonesia's Internet penetration during 2022–2023 reached 78.19 percent, up from 2021–2022's 77.02 percent. The number of internet service providers (ISPs) as of March 2023 reached 909 companies out of 564 companies in 2019. Internet traffic in Indonesia was also growing rapidly, reaching 4.5 terabytes per second, or up 47.2 percent per year. Arif noted that companies adopting digital technology in their businesses, especially on a large scale from abroad, will need a data center located in Indonesia to get closer to their market share. He believes the data center industry can take advantage of this opportunity.https://ekonomi.republika.co.id/berita/rue33r463/industri-pusat-data-masih-potensial-tumbuh-di-indonesia (ICE GIACARTA)
