SEVERAL PROGRAMS TACKLING WASTE ISSUE IN MARINE AREAS: MINISTRY

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry said many programs are reducing marine waste and promoting marine life conservation. "We are also campaigning (to encourage people) not to throw plastic waste on land because some ends up going into the sea," said Directorate General of Marine Space Management Secretary Kusdiantoro on Saturday. He believes 50% of land-based plastic waste enters the water. "Looking at this condition, it is necessary to handle plastic waste not only from the sea but also from the downstream level or from the land," he said at a sustainable waste treatment product and Indonesia's biodiversity conference. Land-based plastic garbage pollutes tourism destinations and marine life, he said.Marine microplastics and nanoplastics may harm fish and humans. To combat this, the government expanded city-based, measured marine fishing areas and coastal farming and conservation areas. Kusdiantoro said the ministry will control waste using Waste Management Law No. 18 of 2008. The government is also enhancing security, oversight, mitigation, and environmental advocacy for women and youth. Thus, Kusdiantoro asked all parties to enhance public awareness regarding preventing trash from entering the ocean, cleaning up marine debris, monitoring, supervision, and legal enforcement. The ministry launched Gernas BCL in 2022 to clean up the waters. The government aimed to reduce 38.5 percent of sea waste by 2022 and eradicate 70% of marine debris by 2025.https://en.antaranews.com/news/282378/several-programs-tackling-waste-issue-in-marine-areas-ministry (ICE GIACARTA)
