KAZAKHSTAN-JET-FUEL-SHORTAGE

Aviation fuel shortage in Kazakhstan hinders development of civil aviation - Ministry of IndustryKazakhstan’s airlines are unable to launch new international flights due to a shortage of aviation fuel, Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Marat Karabayev said."One of the main factors hindering development of the civil aviation is the shortage of jet fuel in the domestic market and its high cost," Karabayev said at a Tuesday meeting of the government in Astana.Because of the jet fuel shortage, the domestic airports have been losing their competitive edge to the airports in the neighboring countries, according to the minister."Due to the unstable situation in the aviation fuel market, the airlines are unable to meet the growing demand for new international destinations," the minister added. The domestic refineries cannot satisfy the demand for jet fuel, and the republic has to import it from Russia, according to Karabayev. In 2022 Kazakhstan produced 648,000 tonnes of jet fuel, while its consumption totaled 806,000 tonnes, so the shortage was 24%. Last year, the republic imported 158,000 tonnes from Russia. In order to overcome the shortage of jet fuel, Kazakhstan should increase its production to 1 million tonnes a year, the minister said.
