NEOM SEEKS CONTRACTORS FOR RED DESERT TUNNEL

The 16-kilometre-long tunnel will be used for a new water pipeline. Neom and its water and electricity utility, Enowa, have issued a solicitation of interest for the construction of a 16-kilometre-long tunnel system accommodating a new water pipeline. Known as the Red Desert Tunnel, it covers the drill and blast of six 8-metre-wide tunnel sections labelled T1 to T6, with a length ranging from 1.3 to 4.8 kilometres. The tunnels are designed to accommodate a 1.8 metre-wide carbon steel water pipeline with provision for a second pipeline of the same diameter at a later date. In addition, the contract will comprise the construction of eight service buildings and two adits for tunnels T4 and T6. The design consultant is US-based Jacobs. The tunnels are understood to be part of a transmission system aimed at transporting potable water from desalination facilities at Oxagon on the Red Sea coast to an area east of the central mountain range called the Upper Valley. The scheme is the latest in a series of tunnel contracts at Neom, the majority of which are for the underground high-speed railway forming the spine backbone under the Line and the Connector South that links the Line with the Oxagon industrial area.
