NICKEL MANAGEMENT AND FOREIGN DEPENDENCE DEFINE THE BATTERY ECOSYSTEM

Indonesia is the largest nickel-producing country in the world, with a total production of 1 million tons in 2021. However, only class 1 nickel or nickel sulfate can be used as the main ingredient in the precursor for the cathode precursors of electric vehicle batteries, while class 2 nickel is usually used for ferronickel as a base material for stainless steel. To achieve this, the government needs to manage nickel resources wisely, learning from history in the management of natural wealth in the form of oil and gas. The most important details in this text are that domestic nickel production needs to be regulated, and that 80 percent of the nickel industry players come from China. PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL) inaugurated the first nickel sulfate production factory in Indonesia on Obi Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, on Wednesday (31/5/2023).PT HPL uses high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) technology with a production capacity of up to 240,000 metric tons per year and a metal nickel content of 54,000 tons per year. The first export of nickel sulfate will be carried out in June 2023. Nickel sulfate is a new technology that can increase capacity in just a few months. Domestic companies face high investment costs, while foreign companies are more prepared to build smelters. Cooperation between domestic business actors and other countries is needed to develop the electric vehicle ecosystem and contribute to economic growth. Bans on exports of nickel ore in 2020 resulted in a deficit in Indonesia's export value, but nickel derivative products provided up to three times the added value.https://www.kompas.id/baca/ekonomi/2023/06/03/pengelolaan-nikel-dan-ketergantungan-terhadap-asing-menentukan-ekosistem-baterai (ICE GIACARTA)
