MOZAMBIQUE MUST INVEST IN NEW ENERGY PRODUCTION FORMS, CAPITALISE RESOURCES 16/06/2023

The government must allocate financial resources for research into new energy production technologies in the country, said National Institute of Mines Deputy Director General Grácio Cune at a conference on the extractive industry in the country. The first day of the extractive industry conference in Maputo this Wednesday and Thursday discussed systems for managing energy resources, with a consensus that there is no fixed finished model, but that governments should seek to supply internal needs first. The position was proposed by the Administrator of the Projects Area at the National Petroleum Institute (INP), José Branquinho, who said that attention to the management of energy resources was essential, since most of the countries that had recently discovered gas had very rudimentary markets.“It would be important to see how to capitalise on these resources at a local level, in addition to simply thinking about exporting,” said Branquinho, adding that “there has been a growing demand for these resources for the development of projects at a local level, which can make resources feed a value chain at the local level.”Since these resources are not renewable, the deputy director general of the National Institute of Mines called for investment in research into other resources. These thoughts also recognise that some neighbouring countries are already experiencing an energy crisis, with South Africa as an example, and that Mozambique can help to minimise the crisis.“I call on universities in Mozambique to investigate new energy generation processes. And the government must, must, must allocate resources to research into new technologies. It’s just that if we don’t invest in researching new technologies, new forms of energy production, we won’t go far,” Cune said.In the mining sector, Cune said that, in addition to coal, resources such as methane, peat, nuclear and geothermal resources, among others, could in the future be used to produce energy to feed national and regional industry.
