US OVERTAKES CHINA FOR BUYING TAIWAN EXPORTS New government data shows nation turning away from China

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The United States has outstripped China to become the No. 1 destination for Taiwan’s exports, according to a Bloomberg article on Thursday (April 11).   For more than two decades China has been the major receiver of goods from Taiwan, but this has changed, according to the Ministry of Finance. The news agency described the shift as a “realignment in global trade triggered by successive U.S. administrations" to reduce dependence on goods made in China.Taiwan’s shipments to the U.S. rose 65.7% on the previous year in March to NT$293.5 billion (US$9.1 billion), while exports to China went up a relatively anemic 6% to US$7.9 billion, per Bloomberg. It also mentioned how South Korea was similarly turning away from dependence on China in terms of exports. Since mid-2003, China has been the top buyer of Taiwan exports. If China’s Hong Kong territory is considered, then China is still Taiwan’s top country to export to. Taiwan News, Contributing Writer Apr. 11, 2024 15:29 (ICE TAIPEI)
