HONG KONG HOLDS GLOBAL PROSPERITY SUMMIT 2024 ON MAY 13-15

Hong Kong holds Global Prosperity Summit 2024 on May 13-15 The Global Prosperity Summit 2024 will be held in Hong Kong from May 13 to 15 as convener and New People’s Party chair Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee said the goal is to make this an annual event and a “buffer zone” for controversial international discussions. There will be a total of five symposia as well as a youth leader forum, covering technology, de-globalization, risk of pan-securitization, artificial intelligence, geopolitics and climate change. Renowned American biochemist and Stanford University professor Roger D. Kornberg, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2006, is invited to deliver a keynote speech. Ip, also the chair of Savantas Policy Institute and Executive Council convener, said the summit is organized by civil think tanks and hopes this high-quality exchange platform can bring together overseas experts to dive into topics that affect global prosperity and come up with relevant solutions. She also hopes this summit can play to Hong Kong’s unique advantage of enjoying strong support from the mainland while staying connect to the world and foster international discussions, as well as to clear misunderstandings about Hong Kong and China. Ip noticed that it has been exactly a month since the enactment of Article 23 and there isn’t much discussion anymore. International communities are more focused on the city’s economy, she said, adding that none of the guests from Europe and the US are concerned. She admitted that a middleman had introduced to her American economist Stephen Roach, who earlier penned an opinion piece that said “Hong Kong is over.” Yet, Ip said she was not interested in inviting Roach and didn’t think that Roach had a deep understanding of Hong Kong. Ip continued that the event is sponsored by the local commerce sector and Chinese enterprises and can apply for funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission. Apart from Kornberg, other invited guests include economists Steve Hanke, Michael Spence, retired senior US diplomat Susan Thornton, and former Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova. Local government officials are invited to the summit too, such as Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong, Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan, and members of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit. https://www.thestandard.com.hk/breaking-news/section/4/215664/Hong-Kong-holds-Global-Prosperity-Summit-2024-on-May-13-15 (ICE HONG KONG)
