BEYON INVESTS $60M IN GLOBAL SUBMARINE CABLE CONSORTIUM

Beyon, through Batelco, is contributing $60 million towards building the SEA-ME-WE 6 positioning it among one of the biggest investors in the global submarine cable consortium.Connecting 14 countries across three continents and stretching from Singapore to Marseille in France, the 19,500-km-long SEA-ME-WE 6 cable system will provide a new gateway to the Gulf, creating a layer of network diversity and resilience for the heavily used routes connecting the Middle East towards Europe and Asia.Beyon, a technology group born in Bahrain, announced that by joining the consortium of 16 major international telecom companies to build SEA-ME-WE 6, it is making its biggest ever investment in global connectivity.This will grant Bahrain direct access to a global cable system with complete independence for the first time, which will enhance its position as an international data hub.Being built at a cost of $600m, the SEA-ME-WE 6 cable is the newest and most advanced in the cable’s history since the first cable was launched in 1985.It will offer one of the lowest latencies available and the capability of transferring more than 100,000 Gigabits per second of data serving international carriers and companies including the likes of Netflix, YouTube and Google, leading to improved performance and better experience for residents in Bahrain.A Beyon statement yesterday said everything is about connectivity with vital importance on Internet speed and reliability to deliver superior user experience for gaming, viewing, streaming and downloading.The connectivity to the global superhighway will ensure the availability of world class Internet services at the best quality.This move reflects the company’s strategic plans to enhance its connectivity capabilities to build a foundation for the future in line with the kingdom’s vision to accelerate digital transformation and the growth of the digital economy.The SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable connectivity to Bahrain is expected to be completed by Q2-2026.
