The tendering process for the King Hamad Causeway, a project aiming to connect Bahrain to the GCC Railway and supplement the existing King Fahd Causeway between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, is currently under discussion, reported Zawya.Hussain Ali Yaqoob, the Director of Land Transportation Planning & Studies and Acting Director of Land Transportation Projects at the Ministry of Transportation & Telecommunication of Bahrain (MTT), shared this information during the Middle East Rail event in Abu Dhabi. Yaqoob mentioned that Saudi and Bahraini officials recently held discussions regarding the project, and the pre-qualification stage has been presented to senior leadership for further action.“In due course, the project would be launched for pre-qualification once we get the final approval,” he said. The transaction advisory team, comprised of KPMG (Financial Advisory), AECOM (Technical Consultant), and CMS (Legal Consultant), has completed Stage 1 and Stage 2 deliverables. Market sounding has been conducted, and global players have been invited to ensure that the project is executed within the appropriate framework.Yaqoob said there is an understanding between both countries that the King Hamad Causeway would be implemented as a public-private partnership (PPP) based on the success of the existing King Fahd Causeway, which has witnessed continuous traffic growth between 5-6 per cent annually, and studies that have validated the new causeway’s financial viability and economically feasibility.Commenting on the GCC Railway, he pointed out that land transport movements between the GCC member countries have grown significantly over the past 20 years.
