CALL FOR EXAMINING POTENTIALS OF PRODUCING LITHIUM BATTERY IN IRAN

Domestic component makers and carmakers are urged to conduct research on the production of lithium batteries concurrent with the import of lithium batteries.Domestic component manufacturers and carmakers should launch studies on producing lithium batteries in order to meet the requisites of electric vehicles in the near future, according to a component industry expert. While stating that hurdles impeding the development of electric vehicles must be removed, Mohsen Razmkhah told Khabar Khodro (a Persian website covering automobile news): “The manufacture of lithium batteries, which is one of the most important parts of EVs, uses advanced technology. Research should be conducted on the production of lithium batteries concurrent with the import of lithium batteries, he added. The expert noted that EVs must be developed alongside the production of gasoline cars in Iran.“Just as Chinese, South Korean, Japanese, European and American car manufacturers have focused on the production of EVs in recent years, it is necessary for domestic carmakers to invest in cars using other kinds of fuels,” he said.“While international automakers, including the Chinese, have been working nonstop on the production of EVs and made good progress, our view regarding electric vehicle production remains consumerist.”Razmkhah stressed that there is no legal obstacle to the production of EVs in the country and its development requires government investment and the determination of car manufacturers.Referring to the lack of infrastructure as one of the main obstacles to the development of EVs in the country, the expert said electric charging stations should be built before starting the production of EVs.“EVs do not have parts such as valves and cylinders, and one of the differences between electric and gasoline cars pertains to their engine and parts, which domestic manufacturers could produce,” he added.Admitting that no measure has been taken to produce lithium batteries and other components of EVs in Iran, Razmkhah pointed out that car manufacturers have started activities in this field, but domestic EVs have not entered the market yet.“The development of EVs in the country will reduce fuel consumption, especially that of fossil fuels, and reduce air and noise pollution,” he said.Saina Electric VehicleSAIPA Automotive Group unveiled its electric vehicle at the Automobile Industry Transformation Exhibition held at Tehran’s International Fairground on Aug. 25-28, 2022, where domestic automakers introduced their capabilities and achievements to industrialists and customers, and prepared the ground for cooperation with other automakers. The automaker displayed the full range of its products, including Saina S hatchback electric vehicle, Khabar Khodro reported. The prototype of this car was unveiled in the fiscal 2018-19, which is the result of cooperation between Khajeh Nasir al-Din Toosi University of Technology’s Facility of Mechanics, SAIPA Research Center and Belgium’s Punch Powertrain Company.Saina S electric is one of the next generations of the X200 project. The car uses an electric engine equal to 70 kW or 94 horsepower, can go from zero to a hundred in 12 seconds and has a maximum speed of 130 km/h. Its lithium-ion battery can be charged in four hours and travel a distance of 200 km. No other detail has been made public about this domestic EV and those who are interested in this vehicle will have to wait for SAIPA's next announcement. What encouraged most global car manufacturers to produce electric cars is the fact that clean and environmentally friendly vehicles are imperative to stave off serious threats of climate change facing the Earth. The high emissions of gasoline and diesel cars, the low cost of charging electric vehicles, which is said to be a third of the cost of refueling gasoline and diesel cars, lowering greenhouse emissions and reducing lung and respiratory diseases are among the benefits of promoting EVs.The unveiling of electric Saina showed the movement of Iranian automobile manufacturers in the right direction, but its mass production needs the industry’s determination and high investments.   (ICE TEHERAN)
