INDONESIA RELAXES EXPORT BANS FOR FIVE MINING COMMODITIES

From 10 June 2023 to 31 May 2024, the government has relaxed export permissions for copper, iron, lead, zinc, and anode mud in copper refining. On Wednesday (24/5), Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif stated that, despite the COVID-19 pandemic hindering the construction of smelters, the government is still allowing holders of Mining Business Permits (IUP) or Special Mining Business Permits (IUPK) for metal minerals, especially for the five commodities, to sell their mineral processing products abroad until May 2024, as long as the companies have the necessary permits. The minister said the export permission relaxation can be cancelled if the IUP or IUPK holder fails to make progress on the refining facility. PT Freeport Indonesia and PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara received exemptions for copper, iron ore, lead, and zinc, respectively. Despite the pandemic slowing bauxite smelter construction, the government will ban exports on June 10, 2023. Indonesian bauxite businesses expect no negative effects from the prohibition. On Thursday (25/5), Ronald Sulistyanto, chairman of the Association of Indonesian Bauxite and Iron Ore Entrepreneurs (APB3I), urged the government to finance domestic bauxite smelters by 25%, as they cost more to build (EUR 1.08 billion per unit) than nickel smelters. He stated that state-owned banks might provide money for downstream bauxite industry expansion.https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Materials/Indonesia-relaxes-June-exports-ban-for-five-raw-minerals (ICE GIACARTA)
