KUWAIT TENDERS AL-ZOUR REFINERY PACKAGE

State-owned Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (Kipic) has tendered a contract for a planned project to develop an alternative feed for the hydrogen production unit at its $16bn Al-Zour refinery.The scope of the contract includes engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work, as well as work covering pre-commissioning, start-up and quality testing.The deadline for the submission of bids for this project is 20 June.In September,  Kipic had contacted the following contractors, among others, soliciting their interest regarding the planned project:Hyundai Engineering & Construction (South Korea)Larsen and Toubro Energy Hydrocarbon (India)Petrofac (UK)Samsung Engineering (South Korea)SK Engineering and Contracting (South Korea)The project has an estimated budget of $150m and is expected to take 36 months to complete.The scope of the EPC work on the project includes:Construction of unit 38 (compression facilities), including piping tie-ins and connections to process and utility headers within the existing interconnecting pipe racks (unit 74)Modifications and associated tie-ins for unit 33 (the existing hydrogen production unit)Construction of unit 60 (steam generation unit)Construction of two new boilers and modifications to extend the existing steam generation unit, including all associated tie-insConstruction of associated facilitiesLast month, the third crude distillation unit (CDU) at the $16bn Al-Zour refinery in Kuwait has been officially scheduled to start operations in June this year.Kipic officially announced the start of operations of the first of three CDUs of the Al-Zour refinery in November last year.At the time, Kipic's acting CEO, Waleed Khaled al-Bader, said that the refinery is providing quality fuel in line with Kuwaiti environmental standards.The project has struggled with significant setbacks during the commissioning phase.In April, it was reported that one of the two CDUs that had already started operations had to be shut down due to technical issues.
