Bursa Malaysia opened lower this morning as cautious sentiments prevailed due to the United States (US) debt ceiling negotiations, said an analyst.At 9.18am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) [Financial Time Stock Exchange-Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Composite Index] declined by 7.28 points to 1,421.26 from 1,428.54 at last Friday’s close.The barometer index opened 4.92 points weaker at 1,423.62.On the broader market, decliners surpassed advancers 242 to 132, while 270 counters were unchanged, 1,604 untraded and 14 others suspended.Turnover stood at 260.59 million units worth RM89.59 million (EURO 18.02 million).In a note today, Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said investors may remain cautious despite the US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell’s comment on a less aggressive interest rate hike, as worries surfaced following the pause on the US debt ceiling negotiations.“All eyes will be on the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes as well as Malaysia’s inflation rate this week,” it said in a note today.On commodities, it said Brent crude oil traded above US$75 (EURO 69.60) per barrel mark, while the crude palm oil price hovered just below RM3,500 (EURO 704.14) per tonne while the gold price stayed below US$2,000 (EURO 1855.90) per ounce.Among the heavyweights, Maybank, Tenaga Nasional and Press Metal slipped seven sen to RM8.71 (EURO 1.75), RM9.75 (EURO 1.96) and RM4.71 (EURO 0.95), respectively, while Public Bank eased two sen to RM3.96 (EURO 0.80) and Petronas Dagangan slid 36 sen to RM22.24 (EURO 4.47).As for the active counters, Bahvest Resources added 2.5 sen to 16.5 sen (EURO 0.033), Jade Marvel increased 1.5 sen to 23.5 sen (EURO 0.047), and Iconic Worldwide inched up half-a-sen to 15 sen (EURO 0.030), while Ho Wah Genting decreased 1.5 sen to nine sen (EURO 0.0018).On the index board, the FBM Emas Index shaved 42.10 points to 10,432.65, the FBMT 100 Index declined 42.14 points to 10,128.22, the FBM Emas Shariah Index went down 38.81 points to 10,790.70 and the FBM 70 Index lost 16.16 points to 13,629.59, while the FBM ACE Index went up 7.22 points to 5,010.12.Sector-wise, the Industrial Products and Services Index shaved 0.33 of-a-point to 164.66, the Financial Services Index fell 74.48 points to 15,531.75, the Plantation Index decreased 32.20 points to 6,994.35 and the Energy Index contracted 0.89 of-a-point to 838.64.
