MOZAMBIQUE: EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRY TO ACCOUNT FOR 16% OF GDP BY 2030 16/06/2023

The government has been taking regulatory measures to remove barriers to investment in Mozambique’s extractive sector in order to raise its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) to 16% by 2030.One of the measures that the executive decided to implement in this regard is the establishment of the Kimberley Process Management Unit, which is responsible for managing security procedures and internal controls in the trading of precious metals and gems. This information was shared yesterday by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, representing the Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane, at the ‘Energy Mineral Resources as a Vector for Global Economic Sustainability’ international conference.Minister Tonela noted that there have been yearly increases in the contribution of gold production and export and precious stones to state revenue.“This sector should contribute more to boost Mozambique’s socio-economic development, as there is still a lot of fiscal space to be explored,” he said. But he added that: “In our view, taxation should be carried out in such a way as not to overburden companies, but also to ensure that they assume their responsibility in the pursuit of sustainability and equity.” (ICE MAPUTO)
