TEXTILE INDUSTRY PLAYERS PROPOSE SPECIAL BODIES AND REGULATIONS

The Indonesian Textile Association (API) has called for the establishment of a special body and laws and regulations for clothing to address the complexity of national textile product (TPT) competitiveness. The textile industry is complex, with upstream raw materials to downstream confections, each with its own problems and developments in innovation progress. The textile industry directly employs nearly 4 million people and indirectly absorbs around 7 million people. The upstream TPT utilization in Indonesia has reached 50%, with some factories shutting down. The TPT ecosystem in Indonesia already exists, from fiber to apparel, with the fiber industry producing polyester and rayon fiber being more advanced than China. However, after the Covid-19 pandemic lifted social restrictions, Indonesia became a target market for TPT exporting countries. The Director of the Textile, Leather and Footwear Industry at the Ministry of Industry, Elis Masitoh, confirmed that there are problems faced by national textile industry players, such as outdated machines wasting energy and the government's machine restructuring program facing budgetary challenges. The TPT sector is considered a "safety net" for the national textile industry, but TPT research and development have lost to other countries. Some existing rules are universal, and the proposed clothing body should aim to benefit many elements of TPT support, not just textile factories. The proposed clothing body should be examined to determine which ones are causing problems for the industry.Link di fonte: https://www.kompas.id/baca/ekonomi/2023/06/21/pelaku-industri-tekstil-mengusulkan-badan-dan-regulasi-khusus (ICE GIACARTA)
