MORE THAN 47 THOUSAND BEEHIVES IN DARAA PROVINCE PRODUCE ABOUT 130 TONS OF HONEY ANNUALLY

The beehives in Daraa governorate produce annually about 130 tons of pure honey through 47,525 hives spread in the areas of Wadi  Al-Yarmouk, Nawa, Al-Sanamay’n, Izraa, Khirbet Ghazala and others. Head of the Planning and International Cooperation Department at the Directorate of Agriculture, Eng. Hassan Al-Ahmad, said that the bee sector is currently recovering in Syria.  He noted that in cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, the Arab Beekeepers Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO),  the Directorate of Agriculture distributed during  the past years beehives and breeding supplies for free to a number of beekeepers  to help them restore their livelihoods.  Head of the Agricultural Extension Department at the Agriculture Directorate, Eng. Muhammad al-Shahadat indicated that the Extension Department is constantly launching campaigns to protect bees and open field schools, the recent of which is in the town of al-Shajara with the aim of training  beekeepers on the integrated management of bees.  He stressed  that the field schools focus on the health care of bees, through  providing medicines of reliable origin and effectiveness.  (ICE BEIRUT)
