SHARP FALL IN RETAIL SALES

The Central Statistical Office (GUS) has reported that in the January to May period this year the volume of retail sales in Poland shrank by 5.9 percent y/y, compared to an increase by 10.6 percent in the corresponding period in 2022. The statistical office has also reported that in June 2023 the current consumer confidence indicator, which provides a synthetic description of the current trends in individual consumption, is at minus 28.2 points, 1.7 percentage points more compared to May and 15.6 percentage points more compared to the year-earlier period. Meanwhile, the leading consumer confidence indicator (WWUK), which describes trends in individual consumption expected in the coming months, is at minus 14.8 points, up by 0.55 percentage point compared to May 2023 and up by 16.5 percentage points compared to June last year.
