Kazakhstan and Georgia to step up cooperation at Batumi seaportKazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy and Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development have signed a memorandum of understanding to further develop cooperation at the Batumi seaport and the Batumi oil terminal, the Kazakh ministry said in a Friday press release."In the memorandum, the parties expressed an interest in maximizing the use of the capacities of Batumi Oil Terminal LLC and Batumi Sea Port LLC, and also agreed to pursue new opportunities for improving the seaport operations and increasing the cargo handling," the press release says.The memorandum was signed during the official visit of Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov to Georgia."The Republic of Kazakhstan and Georgia have enjoyed a longstanding cooperation in the fuel and energy sector. Development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route is of great importance for Kazakhstan, for this corridor offers, among other things, prospects for the growth of cargo transit through Georgia, and a potential for the expansion of bilateral ties in order to diversify routes for exports of Kazakh oil, the production of which is increasing in the republic," the press release says.The Batumi seaport is operated on lease terms by Batumi Oil Terminal LLC, which is wholly owned by Kazakhstan’s KazTransOil JSC. The handling capacity of the seaport is 15 million tonnes of cargoes a year. The terminal handles crude oil and all petroleum products, including diesel, gasoline, black oil and others.In the twelve months of 2022, the Batumi seaport handled 2 million tonnes of oil and petroleum products and 1.7 million tonnes of dry cargoes. The container turnover totaled 119,500 TEU. (ICE ALMATY)
