GOVERNMENT ENCOURAGES SEAWEED DOWNSTREAM DEVELOPMENT

Indonesia's government is working to develop the downstream seaweed processing industry, which has potential for processing around 12 million hectares of seaweed. The country has a large potential for seaweed-derived products, such as fertilizer, feed, pharmaceuticals, food, and biofuels. President Joko Widodo is targeting pilot projects for seaweed commodities in various regions, including Buleleng, Wakatobi, Southeast Maluku, Rote Ndao, and West Nusa Tenggara. The government is also focusing on the restoration of peat and mangrove ecosystems, which will continue until the end of President Jokowi's administration. The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) and a team from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry conducted an evaluation of the Peat Care Independent Village (DMPG) and Mangrove Care Independent Village (DMPM) programs in Merbau District, Meranti Islands Regency, Riau Province. The government is determined to ensure the sustainability of the peat restoration and mangrove rehabilitation program through community involvement. The DMPG scheme aims to raise awareness about keeping peatlands wet by building canal blocks funded by community self-help and village funds. The government hopes that communities will actively participate in the program to ensure its sustainability. Challenges in the field include lack of strong synergy between stakeholders, and KSP continues to communicate with the business world about potential collaborations and contributions.Link di fonte: https://www.kompas.id/baca/ekonomi/2023/06/23/pemerintah-dorong-pengembangan-hilirisasi-rumput-laut (ICE GIACARTA)
