POLISH METALS GROUP TO INVEST EUR 225 MLN TO BUILD ITS OWN SALT WORKS

KGHM, Poland's metals giant, is set to invest PLN 1 billion (EUR 225 mln) in the construction of its own salt works. The salt works would be built near the Glogow Copper Smelter, in southwestern Poland. This undertaking would allow the company to become the largest producer of evaporated salt in Poland and would also increase the country's production capacity, which would be a way to increase the security of raw materials.According to the plans for the project, the salt works will recover water from drained mines and be able to produce one million tonnes of industrial and food salt annually. Moreover, the mine drainage process will also reduce the amount of salt released into the environment by 50 percent. It is also expected that the salt works will produce 70,000 tonnes of fertilisers for agriculture per year. The company anticipates that the project will be completed within six years.
