MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE DISCUSSES WITH FAO THE PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS IMPLEMENTED IN SYRIA

The meeting held between the Minister of Agriculture Agrarian Reform Muhammad Hassan Qatana and the FAO Representative in Syria Mike Robson focused on past and future implementation of programs and projects by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO in Syria.  During the meeting held in the Ministry’s building, Minister Qatana stressed the important role played by the FAO in the previous stage through the programs and projects it implemented in Syria and had a positive impact on supporting agriculture and rural families, especially the rehabilitation of field irrigation networks and livelihood projects and the provision of veterinary vaccines for the livestock sector.  Qatana pointed out that the organization provided about 50 percent of the needs for veterinary vaccines, which supported the livestock sector and helped immunize herds, pointing to the need to pay attention to development projects that are sustainable, expand interventions in the next stage, and pay attention to rehabilitating the main irrigation networks in order to achieve integration, which will reflect positively on the target segments.  For his part, Robson stressed the importance of evaluating the work in the previous stage and its results on the ground, and establishing other projects that are supportive in order to achieve the desired goals, expressing his hope for future projects to be more sustainable.  Robson noted the importance of rehabilitating irrigation networks, in order to have a long-term impact and help farmers deliver water to their land and irrigate their crops.
