AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT TO OPEN A CAMPUS IN PAPHOS BY SEPTEMBER
According to the Mayor of Paphos, the American University of Beirut (AUB) will open a campus in the city as ofSeptember of this year. This announcement came as the Mayor of Paphos and the President of AUB were visitingthe construction site of the new campus. The university is being built in the former building complex Charopoumylous (carob mills) with works ongoing for eight months and at an advanced stage. According to the Mayor of Paphos, the projects advanced rapidly with facilities of the university’s phase A expected to be completed by October 2023. In details, the university will initially operate for a few months in facilities granted by the municipality to the Paphos Innovation Center with the first students to be welcomed in September. Soon after, students will be moved into the appropriate buildings. This project’s construction cost reached EUR 32.0 million (US$ 34.2 million) for the first phase with the total for the three phases reaching circa EUR 100.0 million (US$ 106.8 million) with the capacity to house 3,000 students.In the future, the AUB – Mediterraneo facilities will also expand, as per the Mayor of Paphos. A ceremony to lay the foundation stone will occur with the presence of the President of Cyprus, the Former President of Cyprus, the President of the Board of Commissioners & Members of the Council, the President of the AUB, Members of Parliament, Ministers, the Mayor of Paphos, the Rector of AUB – Mediterraneo, Senior Members of AUB’s Teaching & Administrative staff along with other officials. According to the Mayor of Paphos, this is a significant event as it represents the first time an internationally recognized university with 160 years of history being established in Cyprus.
