THE GOVERNMENT PLANS TO ‘COUNTERATTACK’ US, EU MINERAL POLICIES

The growth of Indonesia's own downstream metals sector could be jeopardized, according to the government, if the United States and the European Union continue to pursue policies that are intended to stimulate the domestic processing of minerals that are essential for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The government has stated that it will endeavor to resist these policies. On Friday, Indonesia's Minister of Investment, Bahlil Lahadalia, told reporters that the government was planning to mandate that between 60 and 70 percent of the country's mineral output be processed within the country before being exported. Shipments that were valued at less than that threshold would be subject to higher export taxes. According to Bahlil, the government intends to export nickel only if it has been processed into cathode, an intermediate product that is just a few steps away from being a part of a battery. Bahlil added that the final manufacturing stages might be done at the export destination if the government is successful in its goal to export nickel as part of the EV supply chain.Link di fonte: https://www.thejakartapost.com/world/2023/06/30/us-state-department-oks-two-possible-military-sales-to-taiwan-.html (ICE GIACARTA)
