OPTIMIZE EUDR NEGOTIATIONS THROUGH THE JOINT TASK FORCE

Indonesia's Joint EUDR Task Force with Malaysia and the EU is the best way to negotiate against the EU's Free Deforestation Products Act (EUDR). The task team prioritizes palm oil, lumber, rubber, coffee, and cocoa. It includes Indonesian and Malaysian government officials, the EU Commission, and key stakeholders. The Joint EUDR Task Force will convene in August 2023.Mansuetus Darto, Palm Oil Growers Union (SPKS) Secretary General, stated that Indonesia has many plans to negotiate and oppose EUDR implementation. Independent oil palm smallholders will be inspired to implement EUDR. 20,000 independent smallholders, SPKS members, and proprietors of 150,000 hectares of oil palm land have RSPO certificates. EUDR due diligence requires satellite imagery-based geolocation data collecting.Large and small enterprises have 18 and 24 months, respectively, to execute the new EU regulation. Indonesia plans to object to the regulation, divert the EU market for palm oil and derivative products to other countries, sue the EU at the World Trade Organization (WTO) court, and raise the issue at the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Agreement (IEU-CEPA) negotiating forum.The task force is supposed to establish agreements that enable producing countries achieve EUDR requirements, determine Indonesia's low-risk status, and accommodate farmers in the EUDR-regulated commodity trade supply chain.
