GRAPHITE AND LITHIUM NEEDS ARE SUPPLIED FROM ABROAD

Due to graphite and lithium shortages, Indonesia is failing to manage the electric vehicle upstream-to-downstream ecosystem. The IEA predicts that electric cars require 66.3 kg of graphite, copper, nickel, manganese, and cobalt. Aluminum and steel are raw materials. Indonesia must import graphite and lithium to become a global battery center, according to Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan. Indonesia has rich raw minerals, including 2.4 billion tons of bauxite ore, 12.5 billion tons of copper, and 682 billion tones of wet cobalt. Manganese resources of 4.9 million tons and titanium potential of 761 tons on Bangka Island limit other mineral materials. Covering the shortfall requires international trade collaboration.Hyundai, an Indonesian electric car manufacturer, developed a battery cell and pack facility to supply batteries for its automobiles. Hyundai will meet domestic component level (TKDN) standards better after the battery factory opens in 2024. Building processing and supporting facilities encourages downstream. Fahmy Radhi, an energy economics observer, thinks Indonesia should prioritize downstreaming and indigenous manufacturing. To secure qualified mineral processing facilities, other countries should commit to technology transfer to Indonesia in negotiations.Link di fonte: https://www.kompas.id/baca/ekonomi/2023/07/11/kebutuhan-grafit-dan-litium-dipasok-dari-luar-negeri (ICE GIACARTA)
