COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS HAVE HUGE POTENTIAL IN CARBON TRADING

Mangrove forests and algae have enormous carbon trading potential. Indonesia's 3.36 million hectares of mangroves hold 3.14 billion tons of carbon, one-third of global coastal carbon stocks. However, carbon trading with these ecosystems demands tremendous research and innovation. Carbon trading is possible in seagrass, mangrove, macroalgae, and microalgae environments. Research and innovation will take 3-5 years to reach mangrove level.Remote sensing by BRIN has the latest mangrove forest measurements. Indonesia can study macroalgae and microalgae after mangroves. More research and calculations are needed to determine the carbon trading system's added value. Southeast Asian macroalgae may absorb 50 tons of CO2 per acre, benefiting farmers through carbon exchange. Plantations must be rejuvenated to preserve their carbon absorption capacity.Presidential Regulation Number 98 of 2021 on Carbon Economic Value Implementation initiated Indonesia's carbon market activities. Carbon trading in the electricity subsector will begin in 2023 with coal-fired power plants above 100 MW capacity, 2024 with those over 25 MW, 2025-2027 with coal-based power plant (PLTU) participation, and 2028-2030 with all fossil fuel-use power plants.Link di fonte: https://www.kompas.id/baca/ekonomi/2023/07/16/ekosistem-pesisir-punya-potensi-besar-dalam-perdagangan-karbon (ICE GIACARTA)
