CROATIA: CROATIA, ITALY, AND SLOVENIA EXPAND ADRIATIC SEA COOPERATION to Include Security

Croatian Foreign Affairs Minister Gordan Grlic Radman attended on Monday in Ancona, Italy a trilateral meeting between Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia also attended by Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani and Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon, during which the three countries signed the Joint Declaration on Trilateral Cooperation and agreed to expand their cooperation in protecting the Adriatic Sea to include security issues, with a focus on illegal migration.    Regarding environmental protection, Grlic Radman stated that further strengthening of cooperation in the field of ballast water management has been agreed upon and also emphasized the importance of the so-called sub-regional plan for interventions in case of sudden pollution of the Adriatic Sea. Among the projects, he highlighted the “Hydrogen Valley in the Northern Adriatic,” which has met the criteria for receiving grants of up to EUR 25 million for the development of a transnational hydrogen valley between Croatia, Slovenia, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Italy’s North-East.  In the field of the blue economy, specifically fisheries, Croatia welcomed the continuation of work within the trilateral ADRIATICA group, added Grlic Radman.  He also reminded that some parts of trilateral cooperation, as well as broader cooperation in priority areas, take place within the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR), and Croatia has assumed the one-year presidency of EUSAIR and the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative (AII).
