CROATIA: BECOMING ‘SERIOUS PLAYER’ IN EU IN TERMS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

POSLOVNI DNEVNIK Wednesday edition analysis writes that Croatia is becoming an increasingly “serious player” in the European Union (EU) when it comes to renewable energy sources (RES), with “new projects constantly emerging.” The daily cites as the latest examples solar power plants in Zagorje and Dalmatia regions, constructed by the Czech renewable energy investment company Woodburn Capital Partners.   In its statement to POSLOVNI DNEVNIK, Woodburn Capital Partners explained that their management is actively working on securing long-term power purchase agreements with major corporations in the region for both projects. Woodburn Capital Partners has already completed five similar projects and has invested over EUR 75 million in biomass and solar energy projects, with a goal to become a leading developer and operator in the field of renewable energy in Central and Eastern Europe and Southern Europe. They are currently considering business opportunities in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH).  The latest data by the Hrvatska elektroprivreda (HEP)-Operator distribucijskog sustava, the state-owned distribution system operator, shows that the number of installed solar capacities in Croatia is increasing every month and reached 305.8 MW on 1 June 2023. In the first half of the year, renewable energy sources accounted for 61.2% of total electricity production in Croatia, while solar energy alone accounted for over 6%. Primarily due to large hydroelectric power plants, but also increasingly with the addition of wind and solar energy capacities, Croatia is among the leaders in the EU when it comes to the utilization of green energy, according to JUTARNJI LIST.   JUTARNJI LIST also cites statistics which show that in the first half of the year, nearly two-thirds of electricity in Croatia was decarbonized. Recently published data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) reveals that Croatia ranked fourth last year in terms of the share of renewable energy sources in electricity production.
