UNDERSTANDING AI AND MACHINE LEARNING IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRY

On July 5, ’23, a report was released by IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees), the largest union representing entertainment industry workers in the United States and Canada. That report articulates the main points in the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies in the entertainment industry.Approach:The application of these technologies threatens the business models so far adopted by entertainment industry majors. Therefore, IATSE advocates for a global campaign of research and education to understand these new technologies.Research:It is important to predict the capabilities and limitations of AI and ML. IATSE of works to establish control, including legislation, of these methods. And which Unions may be most at risk.Collaboration:IATSE has formed a special committee to introduce this new technology to organizations that will use it. These include AFL-CIO Technology Institute, Human Artistry Campaign, Copyright Alliance, given the need for multinational companies to adopt this technology.Education:Union members will be entitled to receive training and appropriate updates on the changes these technologies bring.Organization:Commitment to the promotion of new professional positions in the entertainment industry.Workers’ Rights:IATSE is committed to maintaining the same rights and protections as those workers who do not use AI. The implementation of these technologies should not lead to a loss of jobs, but rather be complementary.Legal Assistance:Support in copyright and intellectual property matters. The Union ensures protection of “human creativity.” Fair compensation and prioritization of people co-involved in the creative process.Bargaining:New provisions regarding AI. Transparency in its use, safeguarding privacy and ethical standards.
