INDONESIA’S TRADE SHRINKS BUT REMAINS IN SURPLUS FOR THIRTY-EIGHT CONSECUTIVE months

Exports and imports both nosedived last month in a reflection of a slowing global economy, but Indonesia maintained its trade surplus for the 38th month in a row. Figures presented by Indonesia's Bureau of Statistics (BPS) secretary general, Atqo Mardiyanto, on Monday (17/7) showed that Indonesia’s trade balance has recorded a surplus for 38 months in a row, since May 2020. Indonesia’s overall imports dropped 19 percent from EUR 19.4 billion in May to EUR 15.6 billion the following month as Indonesia purchased fewer raw materials. In the span of one year, imports also shrank by 18 percent from EUR 19 billion in June 2022. About EUR 13.6 billion of what Indonesia imported last month came from the non-oil and gas sector. Chinese goods accounted for 32.5 percent of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas imports in June. Trade with India, the US, and the Philippines became the biggest contributors to the June surplus. Indonesia saw its largest surplus in the non-oil and gas sector with India, reaching EUR 1.1 billion last month. Animal fats and oils, mineral fuels, as well as precious metals, jewelry, and gems, mostly spurred the surplus in New Delhi. Indonesia’s surplus with the US and the Philippines reached EUR 1.1 billion and EUR 756 million, respectively. Indonesia’s trade deficit in the non-oil and gas sector was the highest among Australia, Thailand, and Germany. Indonesia’s imports of cereals, mineral fuels, sugars, and sugar confectionery were what mainly fuelled the deficit with Australia.Link di fonte: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-books-trade-surplus-for-38-months-in-a-row (ICE GIACARTA)
