DOWNSTREAM INVESTMENT MUST BE ABLE TO PROSPER THE PEOPLE

Manufacturing downstream investment expansion should promote social sustainability and create jobs for downstream populations. In the first half of 2023, manufacturing investment grew 17.7% to IDR 270.3 trillion. This contributed 39.8% to Indonesia's January-June 2023 total investment realization of IDR 678.7 trillion, up 16.1% annually. Investments absorbed 849,181 individuals, up 33% annually. According to Mohammad Faisal, Executive Director of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia, better employment creation must go hand in hand with industrial investment development in order for it to be successful.Investors, the central government, and regional governments must work together to train local educational and training institutions in the special skills needed. Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) components of an industry should also prioritize local worker employment and social sustainability.Manufacturing investment can produce jobs and indirectly boost other industries, including services, maintenance, transportation, food and drinks, and agriculture. The government wants to increase revenue by downstreaming nickel, copper, and tin.
