A senior minister said on Tuesday that Indonesia is developing a new set of incentives to attract investment from electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers like Tesla and BYD. At a nickel industry conference held by CNBC Indonesia, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources Luhut Pandjaitan said the incentives will be benchmarked against those of regional rivals Thailand and Vietnam but did not provide details. Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, has been seeking to lure EV companies with its world-leading nickel reserves, which may be used to make EV batteries. Some automakers, including China's BYD, have invested in Thailand, the region's automotive heartland. Luhut stated, "Tomorrow we are going to finalize incentives that we are going to give to any EV investment in Indonesia," pending President Joko Widodo's assent. On Thursday, Luhut will visit BYD executives in Chengdu, China, and on August 3, he will meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk in California. Indonesia has been courting Tesla for years to host an Asian production hub.
